5 Tips for a Great Legal Writing Assignment

law and order

Writing a brilliant legal paper is difficult for three reasons, the first is because learning the law is like learning a new language that you have to integrate seamlessly into your own language. The second reason is because there are so many ways you can go wrong that most legal issues are won by the person that is less ignorant than the other. Thirdly, writing legal assignments is so difficult because online articles give such terrible advice, such as how you should follow your professor's guidelines. That isn't advice! They may as well tell you not to type the essay with your tongue. Here are five "good" pieces of advice.

1 - Always try to double-source your points

No matter what point you are finding a source for, always try to find two or more sources. Professors like to see attempts to create bulletproof work. Even if you are quoting statistics that have one source, look around for similar studies that suggest similar evidence to what you are suggesting.

2 - Simplicity has its own level of complexity

As you know, legal language was created (ironically) to make things as clear as possible. They do not want their words to be interpreted in any way other than what was intended. This is a fine principle, but not one that you have to maintain on your essay. Start with simple language and simple points, and build in any clarification. If your professor starts complaining that your work is not complex enough, only then need you amend it and change it.

3 - Complete your essay early and hand it in

Most law professors will take a look at your first draft and then hand it back a maximum of three times. The students that do not hand in their work until the day of the deadline are missing out on this. Complete your essay early and hand it in with a note saying you would love a little help. If you see, that meeting a deadline is not sure, feel free to use essay help , provided by our professionals. Take a look at your professor's amendment notes and edit your essay for an almost automatic rise in your essay marks. Keep a look out for recurring mistakes, so you may improve your legal writing for your future efforts.

4 - Do not try to be original, because your professor has seen it all

There are some students that try to attack an issue from an unorthodox angle and make the pieces fit. They think they are being original and unique and that their professor will mark them higher for it, but it is rarely the case. Firstly, you are just making the writing process harder on yourself for no real gain, and secondly, your professor will roll his/her eyes after seeing yet another failed attempt to be original.

To push the point home, consider the life of a beautiful woman. Almost every guy she meets tries to be original. They comment on her hair, they try to start arguments, they insult her, they tell her to buy him a drink, and so on. The men think they are being original, but beautiful woman has heard it all before. The chat-up line she never hears is, "Hi, I'm X - and you are?" Your professor sees students try to be original every term. You can be different by simply doing the work in an efficient and concise manner.

5 - Look at other top-scoring essays

If you spent two months looking at hundreds of different cars, do you feel you would be better qualified to design a car than if you had spent a single evening looking at cars? You can learn a lot of reading other legal assignments, especially those that scored highly. Get your hands on them from your professors or online, and notice the commonalities in style, content and even with the amount of sources the assignment uses per point.
